Home At Last Dedication
January 17

Oakland, Florida

 

The Home At Last program benefits veterans and their families by building handicap accessible homes for those who need them.  Thanks to TOVA's and Trilogy Orlando’s involvement with the group, all Trilogy residents have been invited to attend the Flag Raising and Dedication of Marine Sgt. Stephen Tovet's home.  The date is Saturday, January 17, and will take place in two parts:  the Flag Raising Ceremony will be at 9:00 AM at the home (303 Cross St. Oakland, Fl 34760) followed by the 11:00 AM Dedication in the Oakland Presbyterian Church Christian Life Center.  The guest speaker will be Marine Major General Mike Regner. A free lunch will be served following the Dedication. Please make plans to attend!

TOVA is hosting an educational seminar on Funeral and Cremation Issues.  The seminar will cover decisions that need to be made once death occurs, Social Security benefit information, burial and cremation options, out-of-state transfers, veterans benefits during this time, and more.  David Sawyer from the DeGusipe Funeral Home and Crematory will be our speaker. This event is open to ALL Trilogy residents, family, and friends, not just those members of TOVA! Please reserve the date.  It is sure to be an interesting and informative event on a difficult topic!

Cleanup Time!

Don't you just LOVE this beautiful weather?  Wouldn't you just LOVE an opportunity to be out in it doing something useful and important?? Well, have we got a deal for you!!

 

It is time to get out and clean up our portion of the Wilson Lake Parkway!  

 

So, get out your heavy boots or shoes, put on your work gloves, and meet us at the clubhouse parking lot on Saturday, February 21st at 9:00 AM. If you've got a golf cart you can ride, that would be fantastic, but if not - don't worry - we'll find you a spot! 

 

Remember, if enough of us help with this, it won't take any time at all!  See you there!

Road Dedication for Vietnam Vet

State Road 50 and County Road 565A

 

Please join us this coming Thursday, February 19, at 4:00 PM as we honor US Army Specialist Ronald Gaffney with the unveiling and designation of part of Highway 50 in Groveland in his honor. This young local hero was killed in action in Vietnam fifty years ago on this date.  TOVA Commander Herman Martinez will be the guest speaker at this event.  

 

The event will be held at State Road 50 and County Road 565A on the Northeast corner near the Publix in Groveland.  A number of TOVA members will follow this event with lunch at the Coyote Rojo Mexican restaurant which is located on 214 W. Broad Street at SR 59 and 19.  We hope to see you there!

VA Community Center
Bingo Event!
March 11

TOVA has begun a new project, and we need your help!  We are going to begin serving the veterans at the Orlando VA Community Living Center at Lake Nona.  The veterans there love playing Bingo, so we have arranged to do that for them!

 

We need at least 10 - 12 volunteers!  Services we provide will include getting the vets down to the hall, assisting them in playing the game, handing out prizes, and helping with refreshments.  We will also need baked goods to serve following the game.

 

The date to save is Wednesday, March 11.  We will assemble at 12:15 PM in the Magnolia House parking lot and car-pool from there.

These veterans have served their country well.  Some cannot move the game pieces, others have trouble with comprehension, but they all love the interaction with volunteers and the attention that it gives them.  Giving of our time is just one of the ways we can say, “Thank you!”

Memorial Day Event

The Trilogy Orlando Veterans Association (TOVA) is proud to invite you to our Memorial Day Remembrance.

 

This somber program of remembrance will begin with a procession and includes a Flag Raising by our TOVA Color Guard, a Rifle Salute by the USMC Color Guard, a Guest Speaker, and much more.  

 

Come join us on this day when we remember those who died while serving in the Armed Services.  Bringing your own lawn chairs is recommended. There will be a buffet available at the Grille from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM - reservations are required.

Retiree Appreciation Day

On behalf of BG James Blackburn, Task Force Marne Commander, and the men and women of Fort Stewart, you are cordially invited to attend the annual Retiree Appreciation Day (RAD).  The event will be held in the Venue Auditorium at the CFE Arena and registration begins at 8:00 with presentations starting at 9:00.  We'll have a whole host of guests presenting information of interest to retirees from HQDA, the Veterans Administration, MOAA and the Defense Finance and Accounting Services followed by a County Fair with information booths.  There will also be representatives from the medical community and we'll provide ID card services as well.

Our guest speaker will be Heather Frebe, the Public Affairs Officer for the Orlando VA Medical Center.

An Adopt-a-Roadway Clean-Up has been scheduled for Saturday, April 18th at 9 AM.  We will meet at the Magnolia House parking lot prior to that time.  

 

Safety vests, pick-up tools, and garbage bags will be provided.  It is suggested that you wear gloves, long pants, and leather work boots or shoes.  If you have a golf cart, please bring it.  No sign-up is needed, just mark your calendar and be there!!

Blood, Sweat, and Tears Concert

Shea Homes is putting on a concert in the Trilogy Community featuring Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

 

Volunteers are needed for "TOVA Patrol" duty before, during, and after the concert.  Times of duty will be 11:30 AM to approximately 2:00 PM. Lunch will be provided for those volunteering.  You will need to have the TOVA uniform of hat, shirt, and black shorts or capri's.  No last-minute walk-ins will be permitted!

28th Annual Veterans Reunion
April 23-26

Brevard County - Wickham Park in Melbourne, Florida

 

The Vietnam and All Veterans of Florida, Inc. are sponsoring a reunion of all veterans.  The festivities include food and drinks, music, military vendors and displays, POW/MIA ceremonies, The Last Patrol, and The Moving Tribute. Additionally, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be available to view.

Cooper Memorial Library Program

The Friends of the Cooper Memorial Library Veteran’s History Project Committee will host a Veteran’s Memorial Program on Thursday, May 21, at 5:00 PM in Room 108 at the library located at 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive in Clermont.  This special program is a joint effort between the Friends of the Cooper Memorial Library and the Lake County Library System.   The program will include the book unveiling and signing of the Korean War Veterans, Book 2, along with a special DVD presentation to our veterans from Florida Congressman Daniel Webster.   In the past, these programs have deeply touched those in attendance and we expect this program will do the same. Light refreshments will be served to all our guests.  We encourage everyone to attend and feel free to bring a friend.

 

Welcome Reception

A Welcome Reception to honor Marine Staff Sergeant Brandon Wittwer and his family will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Oakland Presbyterian Church Christian Life Center on Sunday April 26, 2015. There is no charge and the event is open to the public - all are welcome.

 

Staff Sergeant Wittwer and his wife are both graduates of Osceola High School in Kissimmee and are the proud parents of three children Kaydence, Karter, and Kaylee.

 

The thirty year old Wittwer, a twelve year Marine veteran has served our country well and faithfully with deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Injured in Iraq, he was medically retired and honorably

discharged from the Marine Corps in November of 2014 with a 100%  VA disability rating.

 

A new home located at Cross Street and Briley Avenue in Oakland will be built for the Wittwer's as part of the ongoing Home At Last program

We have a couple of things on the agenda for this evening.  We will be discussing and voting on the amended By-Laws that were introduced last meeting.  IF the by-laws are accepted by the membership, we will be soliciting nominations for the new Member-at-Large position.  Finally, Larry Berman will be speaking.

 

Please make every effort to attend this meeting, because we need a quorum in order to accept the new By-Laws! See you there!

 

Flags for Fallen Vets
May 24

Florida National Cemetery

Bushnell, FL

 

The mission of this project is to place over 120,000 American Flags on the graves of the Veterans in this cemetery.  Both volunteers and monetary donations are needed. We will head out in car pools from the Magnolia House parking lot and have lunch when we are finished.

 

Planning is important, and we need to respond quickly to the event organizers. You will receive a ticket that will reserve your spot, and, if you volunteer, you MUST attend or get a replacement. 

 

These men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We need to see that they are honored for that sacrifice. Please consider attending this event. 

 

TOVA members are just too fantastic!!  The membership contributed $265 for the purchase of flags for this event.  TOVA matched that contribution with an additional $250, making the total amount $515 that were given towards this worthy cause. Thanks again for your generosity, TOVA members!!

Finally, we even had three individuals attend the flag clean-up the following week after this event.  Thanks so much to all who participated!!

TOVA will be honored to host retired Chief Warrant Officer Robert Hartley at this month's meeting.  He will talk briefly about his 22 years of service, including 2 combat tours of duty in Vietnam as a decorated attack helicopter pilot.  Hartley has written a book, Gunship Pilot, which can be found on Amazon.com, and which he will be happy to sign for you that evening, should you purchase a copy. This will be an open meeting, and all members of Trilogy are invited to attend and be inspired by CMO Hartley’s story.  See you there!

 

The Ed Sullivan Show
June 20

Tickets go on sale April 17th for the Tribute to the Ed Sullivan Show to be held on Saturday, June 20th, 7:00 PM, at the Magnolia House Event Center! The show is proudly presented by Lucky’s Jukebox memories and the Trilogy Orlando Veterans Association. This over two hour show has been seen all throughout Orlando to sell-out crowds!  It features the talents of Jim Carter as Fats Domino, Peter Alden as Ricky Nelson, and George Trullinger as Buddy Holly and Ed Sullivan.  

VIP table seating is now sold-out!  Tickets are $20 for general stadium-seating admission.  They can be purchased at the Member Services Desk using Cash or Check (made out to TOVA) only.  All proceeds go to TOVA for their charitable support of veterans.

Luau!!

Enjoy a tremendous Luau and evening of fun and LIVE entertainment by the Jukebox Memory Band!  Hula girls, fire dancers, and more will greet you at the main entrance to the Magnolia House. Our LIVE performers will include George Trullinger as Ed Sullivan (a favorite from a previous performance), and a tribute to the performers that made beach music famous:  the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Fabian, Don Ho, and more! 

 

Tickets go on sale at the Magnolia House Guest Services Desk on July 13 for full table (10-12 people) sales only at $20 per person. On July 27, single ticket sales will be available. All seating is table seating for this event.

 

A buffet will be provided, at an additional cost, by BlueStar prior to the performance.

Request for Help
Veteran's History Project Committee

The Veteran’s History Project Committee, a subsidiary of The Friends of Cooper Memorial Library, will be interviewing Vietnam War veterans from Clermont, Groveland,  Mascotte, Minneola, and Montverde.  These interviews will be included in the “Collection of Memoirs, Volume 6, Vietnam War Veterans.” The series of memoirs start with World War II veterans and the latest, Volume 5 Korean War and World War II veterans, published May 2015.  

 

The Collection of Memoirs is housed in The Cooper Memorial Library, 2525 Oakley Seaver Dr., Clermont on the 2nd Floor Genealogy Section and 3 World War II volumes are housed in the World War II Museum in Downtown Clermont’s Historic Village.

 

If you are interested in participating in this project, please set up an appointment, at your earliest convenience, by calling Audrey Jackson-Morgan at 352-536-9954. Interviewers and proofreaders are also asked to join the group.

US Army Field Concert Band

Join us for an unforgettable night as the U.S. Army Field Concert Band & Soldier's Chorus performs at the First United Methodist Church of Clermont.

 

The Concert Band is the oldest and largest of the Field Band's four performing components. This elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, founded in 1946, has performed in all 50 states and 25 foreign countries for audiences totaling more than 100 million.

Additionally, the meeting includes a speaker’s topic that is so important, it will be open to ALL Trilogy residents and guests!!  Larry Berman, former VA Assistant Service Center Manager, will discuss the VA’s Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for surviving spouses of veterans. Trilogy Orlando Veterans Association (TOVA) cordially invites all Trilogy residents and guests to join us as we pay tribute to veterans past and present on Veterans Day. Legendary and award winning television anchor Marla Weech of Central Florida News 13 will serve as this year's emcee. Our guest speaker will be Navy Commander Henry Philips from the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division.  Also on the program is a moving presentation of the colors of the armed services, including the singing of the various services’ songs by the Voices of Trilogy and the Star Spangled Banner by our own Tabitha Fullington.  

 

A fantastic buffet will be presented by the Grille, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for a cost of $15.95.  All veterans’ meals will be complimentary (excluding drink and tip).  If you are a TOVA member, the Grille will already have your name; if you are not, you will need to present proof of service to receive your free meal.

 

Please make plans to be with us on this special evening!

Second Annual Holiday Golf Cart Parade

It's almost time to show off your decorating talents in the TOVA Holiday Golf Cart Parade!  Gift cards and trophies will be awarded for the best decorated carts, so get your plans together and come up with a fantastic holiday design!  Decorated carts will need to be in line outside the clubhouse by 4:30 PM to get registered, and the parade will begin at 5:00 PM

.

Attention, all Corvette owners! If you would like to be part of the parade, please come up to the clubhouse. 

 

If you don’t have a golf cart, be sure to put the date and time on your calendar so you can watch the parade go by!

Wreaths Across America

We want to send volunteers to help place wreaths on the fallen veterans' graves and send donations to purchase those wreaths.  
Volunteer to attend by emailing Denise Gentry at dlgentry60@gmail.com.  
 
Wreaths cost $15, but for every two wreaths we donate, we will be given an additional wreath for free! TOVA will match all donations from Trilogy, up to $600.
