John Mathias

Passed March 18th, 2020

Founding Member of TOVA

Wednesday evening, shortly after 5:30 P.M. EDT, John Mathias passed away.  John was a Founder of TOVA and its long-time Vice Commander, giving up the post last July when his health deteriorated.

At his passing John was surrounded by his wife of over 25 years, Sharon, and friends.  John's passing was not unexpected, and he beat the odds for his condition.  Last year about this time he was given a prognosis of "Terminal, and you'll be gone by July."  Well, here it is mid-March, so he got an extra 8 months, largely by the force of his will.

However, John did not fight this. He was at peace with his condition, and with his God and his faith. His only concern was leaving Sharon. To help himself through this time, John instituted what he recently called a Living Wake. Several of us friends would gather each Friday afternoon for an hour or so of Scotch-and-BS. John lived for those Fridays.

John with be encrypted at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. At the moment, we do not know the specific date, and it will depend on the coronavirus and counter-virus measures that we must take. So, stay tuned.

For those of you who knew John, the next time you're in The Grille, raise a glass to John -- husband, father, friend and patriot.
